    South Beach Diet



    To be honest, I've only heard of the Atkins diet on that list and just know that it includes eggs (as per the pictures at my local BBQ restaurant). Anyway, I have first hand experience on the South Beach Diet as well as witnessing the results in my girlfriend and her mother.

    The South Beach Diet is basically 3 phases. Phase 1 is "Eliminating Cravings and Kickstart Weight Loss," Phase 2 is "Lose Steadily," and Phase 3 is "Maintain for Life." When I did the South Beach Diet it was extremely hard at first. In Phase 1, it calls for NO carbs which means NO rice, NO pasta, and NO potatoes - all the basic foundation of every of my usual meals. During this phase my diet consisted of a lot of steamed spinach and broccoli drizzled with olive oil, grilled chicken and fish (again only using olive oil), and tofu. I saw the biggest drop in weight during these 2 weeks of Phase 1 and probably was attributed to the fact I was eating no rice (I would normally have about 3 bowls between breakfast and lunch and 3 bowls during dinner - Asian cuisine calls for a lot of rice). I lost about 12 pounds during this time.

    Phase 2 was of course easier because I was able to eat pasta. It was whole wheat but at least it was pasta. I couldn't say the same thing about rice because I absolutely cannot eat brown rice. So just the addition of pasta made it a lot easier for me to follow the diet.

    Here's the thing though, I could not stay away from white rice and that's when I gave up on the diet. In order for diets to be successful, you must dedicate yourself fully to it and keep up with it, just like lifting weights and exercise. To see a difference in your body you must follow it strictly. My girlfriend and her mother have been doing the South Beach Diet and have lost 5 and 15 pounds, respectively, in only 5 weeks. This is their third try on the South Beach. The first two times they lost about the same weight in the same amount of time but they quit and soon gained back the weight they had lost. I guess that's why Phase 3 of the South Beach Diet is called "Maintain for Life." You must keep following the habits of the diet in order to maintain a steady weight loss and when the time comes, just to maintain that weight.

    I think that's the hardest part though, keep on going after a few weeks. I lost motivation and I missed the junk foods and rice that I was so used to. I can say that the South Beach Diet truly works it's just that you need to STAY DEDICATED and don't lose focus while on it. Don't stray away and you will lose the weight.

    Weight gain/loss is simply eating more or less calories than your own body maintenance. You could even eat only fast food and see a weight loss. The reason why people tend to gain weight on fast food though is because there are a lot of calories in the bun, fried meat, processed cheese, etc,. Interestingly enough, I have heard of a ice cream diet. I don't know the specifics and can only assume it means you only have ice cream. While this will probably lead to weight loss, it is NOT HEALTHY. You aren't getting the full spectrum of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in other foods.
